What if three words could tell the story of who you are?
Pieces of Us is a contemporary art and music project by Oduweku Francisca Wuraola (Gholldy), powered by Exceptional Pathways.
The project explores identity through portraiture, asking individuals to choose three words that describe something meaningful about who they are. Those words then become the starting point for an artistic interpretation — transforming personality, passion, values and experience into colour, texture, movement, light and composition.
Rather than simply creating a portrait, Pieces of Us asks a deeper question:
What happens when the things that describe us become part of the way we are seen?
THREE WORDS. ONE PERSON. ONE PIECE OF ART.
Every artwork in Pieces of Us begins with a person.
Participants are invited to choose three words that they feel represent something about themselves — whether that is their personality, their passions, their beliefs, their experiences or the things that matter to them.
Those words are then given to Gholldy.
From there, the process becomes an artistic interpretation.
The words are not simply written onto the artwork or represented through obvious symbols. Instead, Gholldy translates them into colour, texture, movement, atmosphere, light and composition.
The result is a collection of portraits where the artwork becomes an extension of the person.
Each piece is different.
Each story is different.
But together, they become Pieces of Us.
FROM WORDS TO VISUAL LANGUAGE
The project is built around a simple creative process:
01 — THE PERSON
It begins with a conversation.
A person shares three words that describe something meaningful about themselves.
02 — THE WORDS
Those three words become the creative brief.
They provide the emotional and conceptual foundation for the artwork.
03 — THE INTERPRETATION
Gholldy translates the words into a visual language using colour, texture, movement, light, space and painterly intervention.
04 — THE PORTRAIT
The person's face remains at the heart of the work, but the portrait becomes part of something larger.
05 — THE PIECE
The finished artwork becomes an interpretation of the person — not simply what they look like, but something of what they represent.
THE COLLECTION
01 — GOONER AT HEART
GOONER • SPORTY • PASSIONATE
THE IDEA
Gooner at Heart explores identity through devotion, energy and belonging.
The portrait is immersed in the visual language of football without becoming a literal sports illustration. The work considers what happens when something we love becomes part of how we define ourselves.
VISUAL LANGUAGE
The dominant red carries the emotional intensity and identity associated with being a Gooner. Football-inspired movement introduces the sporting element, while dense painterly energy and warm accents communicate passion.
The portrait remains central because the football world is not simply around the subject — it has become part of his identity.
HOW IT CAME ABOUT
The work began with three words chosen by the participant: Gooner, Sporty and Passionate.
Gholldy translated those qualities into colour, movement and expressive paint, allowing the visual language of football to merge naturally with the portrait.
02 — BEYOND THE HORIZON
ADVENTUROUS • GODLY • LOYAL
THE IDEA
Beyond the Horizon considers adventure as a willingness to move forward, godliness as a sense of connection to something greater, and loyalty as the grounding that keeps us connected to where we come from.
The work explores the balance between moving forward and remaining rooted.
VISUAL LANGUAGE
The open pathway and distant light suggest adventure and movement toward possibility.
The elevated light introduces a sense of spiritual connection without relying on literal religious imagery, while darker, grounded forms represent loyalty, stability and connection to one's foundations.
The landscape becomes a metaphor for the journey rather than a literal representation of adventure.
HOW IT CAME ABOUT
The three words were treated as qualities of one person rather than as separate symbols.
Gholldy built a visual journey around the subject, using distance, light, colour and grounded forms to communicate someone who is willing to explore without losing their centre.
03 — UNCONTAINED
CRAZY • CHARISMATIC • BOLD
THE IDEA
Uncontained presents personality as energy that refuses to stay neatly within boundaries.
Crazy is interpreted as controlled unpredictability.
Charismatic becomes a magnetic presence.
Boldness becomes the confidence to occupy space without apology.
VISUAL LANGUAGE
Fragmentation and energetic marks create a sense of unpredictability, while strong contrast draws attention toward the subject's face and creates a magnetic presence.
Confident colour fields and expanding painted forms communicate boldness.
The visual chaos remains controlled, allowing the artwork to feel expressive without becoming overwhelming.
HOW IT CAME ABOUT
Gholldy began with the three words and deliberately avoided literal symbols.
Instead, personality was translated into composition, colour, contrast and painterly intervention, allowing the portrait itself to feel as though it is pushing beyond its own boundaries.
04 — HELD IN GRACE
BLESSED • RESILIENT • PEACE
THE IDEA
Held in Grace explores gratitude, endurance and calm as three parts of the same experience.
The work considers how strength and peace can exist together — and how remaining grounded through difficulty can itself become a form of grace.
VISUAL LANGUAGE
Warm light and gold suggest blessing and gratitude.
Broken and layered textures represent resilience and the strength required to remain whole through difficulty.
Softer cream, blue and muted passages create breathing room, allowing peace to be experienced rather than represented through a literal symbol.
HOW IT CAME ABOUT
The participant's three words became three visual behaviours: radiance, layered texture and spaciousness.
Gholldy brought these elements together around the portrait so that the three qualities could exist as one emotional state rather than three separate ideas.
05 — THE INNER SEARCH
SPIRITUAL • CREATIVE • INQUISITIVE
THE IDEA
The Inner Search explores spirituality as inner connection, creativity as transformation, and inquisitiveness as the desire to look beyond what is immediately visible.
The artwork considers the inner world — the thoughts, questions and ideas that continue beyond what another person can immediately see.
VISUAL LANGUAGE
Upward movement and inner light suggest spiritual connection.
Flowing painted forms emerging around the head and body represent creativity and ideas taking shape.
Directional lines and fragmented marks extending from the gaze suggest curiosity, questioning and the search for discovery.
The face remains recognisable because the act of looking, observing and wondering is central to the idea of inquisitiveness.
HOW IT CAME ABOUT
The portrait itself became the canvas.
Rather than placing the subject against an unrelated artistic background, Gholldy allowed colour, paint, light and line to emerge from the figure.
The visual intervention therefore becomes an extension of the person's inner world.
BEYOND THE IMAGE
Pieces of Us is not simply a collection of portraits.
It is an exploration of the space between how we see ourselves and how others see us.
A portrait can capture a face.
Three words can reveal something more.
Through colour, texture, movement, light and composition, Gholldy gives those words another language.
The intention is for audiences to recognise the person first, and then gradually discover the ideas, qualities and emotions held within the image.
There are no single correct interpretations.
The artwork offers a starting point.
The viewer completes the story.
PIECES OF US (the music)
The project extends beyond the visual works.
Gholldy has created original music around the project, also titled Pieces of Us, creating a second layer through which the themes of identity and personal expression can be experienced.
Where the visual works translate words into colour, texture and image, the music translates the project into sound.
Together, the two forms create a multidisciplinary experience — one that can be seen and heard.

MEET THE ARTIST
ODUWEKU FRANCISCA WURAOLA
GHOLLDY
Gholldy is the artist and creator behind Pieces of Us, bringing portraiture, contemporary visual art and music together to explore identity and personal expression.
For this project, she collaborated with Exceptional Pathways, developing a visual language in which individual words become colour, texture, movement and atmosphere.
Her approach is centred on interpretation rather than literal representation — allowing each person's words to influence the way their portrait is constructed and experienced.
Through Pieces of Us, Gholldy explores the many layers that exist behind a person's appearance and asks audiences to consider what makes each of us distinct.
Pieces of Us is powered by Exceptional Pathways, supporting the development of the project as a multidisciplinary creative experience bringing together visual art, music, storytelling and collaboration it was .
The project reflects Exceptional Pathways' commitment to creating spaces and opportunities where creative expression can be used to explore identity, experience and human connection.
